The educational arts program typically draws about 150 youths to the audition.Īfter a forced hiatus due to the pandemic, Poway OnStage spent its last season adapting to restrictions while resuming live entertainment. Over six days next spring the cast of more than 60 youngsters will spend several hours after school rehearsing “Rumpelstiltskin” for two performances on March 11. For more than 20 years the group has partnered with Poway OnStage to provide a free musical theater camp for children in kindergarten through 12th grade.

In addition to the professional shows, local children will have an opportunity to perform on stage when the world-renowned Missoula Children’s Theatre returns. 24 ABBA-Mania: An ABBA Tribute on April 8 and The Drifters on April 22. Other shows will include The TEN Tenors on Dec. The band’s former lead guitarist, Don Felder, know for hits like “Hotel California” and “Victim of Love,” will be featured. Rennie said teachers interested in learning about the shows can contact Poway OnStage at or 85.Ī “must-see” show for fans of the Eagles is set for Nov. “They have a beautiful story to tell and dance to share.”Īll three cultural offerings will include opportunities for students throughout the county to attend special shows. “We have been wanting to celebrate our local Native American tribes and this one uses a performing arts component to tell their stories through dance,” Rennie said. “I can’t remember when we last had Spanish language content on stage, so this is long overdue,” said Rennie, who has been with Poway OnStage for 19 years.Īs a community engagement offering, Sewam American Indian Dance will perform at 2 p.m. Presented by an actress who uses puppets and other objects, “Cenicienta” is empowering and “a terrific show,” Rennie said. “The premise is the Cinderella story, but instead of the Prince Charming/Cinderella story she is a would-be writer who is forced by her stepmother and stepsisters to spend the evening in a basement when they are hosting a renowned author upstairs,” Rennie said.

“Imagine a stage production of the Disney movie ‘Coco,’” Rennie said.Īnother is “Cenicienta: A Bilingual Cinderella Story” at 2 p.m. It uses traditional regional music and dance from Mexico to tell the story of a 12-year-old girl. This touring bilingual (Spanish and English) and bicultural musical is geared toward young audiences and families. Opening Poway OnStage’s season will be “Sugar Skull: A Dia de Muertos Musical Adventure” at 2 p.m. “Our stock in trade is to have national and international acts, but we heard from our audience that they also have other shows in mind - those that are multigenerational, for families and young people,” he said, adding, “Families and seniors like matinees.” New for this coming season are bilingual shows for the family and matinees in response to audience requests, Rennie said.

“Our goal is to have great headline acts that the Poway audience can be proud of,” said Michael Rennie, Poway OnStage president and CEO, of the 2022-23 Professional Performance Series announced on June 14. A mix of music legends, tribute acts and family oriented, multicultural fare are among the 10 shows to be presented by Poway OnStage during its upcoming season.
